We all heard at least hundred times in our lives an expression: “supply and demand define the market” and it is unmistakable statement. We at Cro Yachting always try to create a supply by first understanding a demand and it is not an easy job.The biggest problem is to predict which type of vessel will our clients demand. This kind of foresight demands a lot of knowledge and market analyses and past market trends show that it is possible to predict cycle shifts but not with complete accuracy in duration.
Today this problem is even bigger because of large variety in boat models and types. If you want to create a charter fleet, it is not enough to predict whether there will be more sailing boats or motor boats in the charter in the next few years, today you need to take into consideration even a size of the vessel, bareboat or crewed, years of the boats, and number of hulls.
Exactly this last segment, number of hulls, is the latest entry in nautical tourism. Somehow multihulls – catamarans in particular -are becoming increasingly popular and desired among cruisers, almost without anyone noticed it. One of the rare market growth during the recession.
Reasons lies in high level of comfort and living features you can find aboard any multihull. Multihulls are boats or ships consisting of two or more hulls, or vakas, joined by some structure, the most basic being a frame, formed of akas. First of all there is stability. As they have two or more hulls there is no unnecessary leaning, swinging, drifting, etc.
Second thing you will immediately notice aboard catamarans and other multihulls is a living space aboard. You have enough space to place up to six or even more cabins, usually 4 plus crew cabins, large and fully equipped galleys, large saloon, dining table in the aft deck, and more.
One of the reasons why catamarans became so popular over the years is a design. Old style quirky looking catamarans are gone long time ago. Today design, performance and handling of cruising catamarans has improved dramatically. Cats today are all about space and view, and can be very good looking. Catamarans represent nautical luxury accessible to the wider range of people.
Trend that almost every new catamaran follows is a panorama window. Designers realized that more light inside the cockpit will make their boats more attractive and livable. Other great feature is flybridge which provides better view and makes it easier to maneuver. And use of outdoor area on board becomes quiet genius and innovative. Large sunbathing areas, seating areas, dining tables, lounge areas, and more.
Never the less, design isn’t only thing that separates modern cats from the old ones. New cats have also been an improvement in the speed, performances, safety and handling. What use to be not so good looking cruiser, and than became better looking family cruiser, today is great looking family friendly cruiser/racer.
Have you ever noticed any regatta or some bigger event close to the sea without catamaran floating near by?
As the situation is developing, soon there will be expression: “Once you go mulltihulled, you’ll never go back.”
